Lila, a bright and inquisitive 14-year-old from Rapid City, South Dakota, has always had a deep fascination with the world of science. Growing up in a Lakota Sioux family, she often found herself gazing at the stars, dreaming of becoming an astronomer one day. However, limited resources at her school made it difficult for her to explore her passion.
With support from the Rising Spirits Initiative, Lila was granted access to hands-on science workshops held at a nearby university. These workshops introduced her to exciting experiments in physics, biology, and astronomy, allowing her to meet inspiring mentors and other like-minded peers.
The program also provided her with a starter kit of scientific tools, including a telescope, to continue exploring at home. Lila’s family has expressed immense gratitude for the opportunities that have ignited her potential and deepened her love for science.
Today, Lila is more determined than ever to pursue her dreams, often sharing her newfound knowledge with her younger siblings. She hopes to one day inspire other Indigenous youth to reach for the stars - literally and figuratively.
